The New York Times looks at Benny Distefano and the dearth of left-handed catchers. Distefano's appearance behind the plate on August 18, 1989 (box score) remains the last time a lefty has donned the tools of ignorance.

In the article it mentions that pitcher Sam McDowell played shortstop for the 1970 Cleveland Indians for two right-handed batters before returning to the mound.
I don't remember ever seeing a pitcher take another position for a few batters and then return to the mound.
It has happened a few times. The most recent example I can think of is Chris Resop for the Braves on April 3, 2008. My favorite part of the McDowell game is not only was he a lefty infielder, but he made a putout, too.
Sean Marshall did it for the Cubs this season, and Jesse Orosco and Roger McDowell (another McDowell!) did the same for the Mets in a famous fight-filled game with Cincinnati in 1985.
